Charisma is exactly the quality on which legends are built. It fascinates others, makes little people strong and managers stars, gives people a magical aura and great strength and power. Some people are distinguished by their charisma and manage to overshadow everyone else with it.

Charismatic people are the shamans of today. There is something certain about them, the wow factor, the gift to charm others. A privilege that immediately makes them the center of attention. Synonyms for charisma are radiance or the effect of a person’s presence.

The term Charisma itself was originally coined by Christian theologians. They introduced the concept of the gift of grace nearly two millennia ago and used it to describe people inspired by the Holy Spirit who have a special degree of wisdom, knowledge, and faith.

Today, especially in management, charisma is rather a special gift and spirit of managers with a special effect, a mysterious part of their personality that gives them an almost magical and irresistible aura. This makes them a brand.

One thing is for sure: charisma makes people popular. Charismatics act exclusively, think outside the box and are independent of the opinions of others. It is said that many politicians and celebrities have this gift. However, charisma remains an elusive quality. She seems almost mysterious to others, who just can’t put it down. You feel charisma when you see!

4 types of charisma

In her book The Charisma Myth, Olivia Fox Boar identifies four very different types of charisma that affect people in the same way:

Focused Charisma (Bill Gates, Mahatma Gandhi)

Charismatics of this type radiate a huge effect of presence. You seem to be awake, listening carefully and understanding quickly. People with concentrated charisma immediately fill the room. The response of others to this: admiration.

Authoritarian charisma (Barack Obama, Margaret Thatcher)

This form of charisma is based primarily on strong self-confidence. Self-confident charisma draws others under its spell and gives the owner high status and influence. First of all, those around you feel gratitude and awe.

Ghost Charisma (Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King)

People with this kind of charisma have a strong faith or vision in which they are deeply convinced. It inspires others and drives them to excellence. Ghostly charismatics motivate and inspire.

Good Charisma (Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa)

Good charisma cannot be trained – this is an internal attitude. Deeply authentic, warm and sensitive. People around you immediately feel accepted, loved and protected. Relationship giants among charismatics.

Is it possible to learn charisma?

For a long time it was clear that charisma cannot be learned – it is an innate quality. She either exists or she doesn’t. But this is a mistake. Charisma is not an innate trait, but, as mentioned above, an external perception. Whether we have it or not, we do not decide.

Whether charisma is (in part) due to the action of genes remains a matter of debate. After all, science has now explored this phenomenon more intensively, highlighting five main characteristics that characterize charismatics:

  1. Inspiration that motivates
  2. Individuality that impresses

You have already noticed that a lot of this has to do with a strong sense of self-worth. The charismatic aura that attracts and inspires us all is the strong and seemingly unshakable self-confidence that someone possesses no matter what he or she does.
